1. Where did Kathryn Schulz come from ?
Schulz was born and raised in Shaker Heights, Ohio. Schulz is the daughter of teacher Margot Schulz and lawyer Isaac Schulz. Her sister is Laura Schulz. After graduating from Brown University in 1996, she moved to Portland, Oregon, and lived there for a little less than four years.

During the period from 2001 to 2006, she edited Grist an environmental magazine on the web. Before that she worked as a reporter and editor for The Santiago Times in Chile covering environmental, labor, and human rights issues. Schulz was a 2004 recipient of the Pew Fellowship in International Journalism (now the International Reporting Project), and has reported from throughout Central and South America, Japan and the Middle East.
